Trends for the second half of 2020

Posted by Mirela Mendoza on

Is fashion still a concern in the middle of a pandemic? How sustainable can your wardrobe be? How are brands and designers reducing their impact and helping communities? These questions are proving to be the most important when talking about trends. In 2020 fashion had to take a look back and rethink a lot of aspects of the industry. From digital runways to sewing masks and using organic materials, the biggest trend is a sustainable approach.

Couture designers are taking the lead in repurposing the concept of fashion in a sustainable way. Ronald van der Kemp and Iris van Herpen are incorporating textile waste, vintage pieces, and other brands leftovers into their collections. Stella McCartney has made sustainability a runway trend with organic, recycled, & sustainable garments, made with natural dyes and vegan leather. But, besides sustainability, what other trends can we expect for the rest of the year?

Colors

This season's trends are proving to be very bright. Following a year of bright neon hues, 2020's color trends included pastels as soft as pistachio green, baby blue, mint green, pale pink, and lavender that will soon be everywhere. Other essential palettes include Saffron, Denim Blue and Chive. There's a big return to the essentials, with neutral colors such as white and beige being present in almost every runway. The latest fashion obsession, the suit, is a big trend in beige. I love this because a classic is always a great investment for your wardrobe, and it will allow you to play with bolder choices for your everyday outfits.

Trenchcoats

Speaking of beige, there’s nothing quite as elegant and practical than a trench. Fashion’s love affair with trench coats is not going anywhere, they are a practical, goes-with-everything outwear option. The classic trench coat was given an update this year when designers began swapping its traditionally beige color palette for a range of bright colors and materials. This year the trench is reimagined with broad shoulders, pockets and additions that keep the classic silhouette modern and forward. There's also a lot of 70's influence. Expect to see it in fresh colorways, glossy finishes, and even black leather.

Dramatic Shoulders

Puffed sleeves have made a huge comeback for 2020. They're arguably one of the biggest trends of the season to try out. The puffy sleeve can modernize a classic silhouette and it is a flattering style for all body types. It adds extra volume to your shoulder and makes the waist look slimmer. Runway proposals tend to go big and dramatic in this style with a strong shoulder, paired with a more straight sleeve for a more editorial finish. But don't worry, there are plenty of less intimidating options to fit this trend, which makes it ideal for a streetwear outfit.

Texture is everything

Macrame, frills, and tiers are taking over the runways to bring more texture and volume to your wardrobe. Crochet is getting a cool update with ultra-feminine dresses, polished suiting, and eveningwear that feels modern with a special touch of handmade crochet. The fringed finished is one of the most present. I believe that with the steps taken towards a slower fashion, it's a perfect trend that embraces a slow, handmade technique. On the other hand, with tons of romantic influence, frills and ruffles are making a comeback. Whether on modern shirts or in the form of a refined bib, this gorgeous detail is enough to make any silhouette shine.

Sustainable Materials

As more designers opt for animal-free versions, specifically ones with a sustainable source, vegan leather is the one material everyone's excited to wear. Biker shorts, coats, skirts... Ethical Leather will be a must-have this year. Keep an eye on the colored leather styles for the summer and heavy, black leather for the fall. Another material very welcomed was raffia, a natural and sustainable fiber that can be found from dresses and skirts from Dior and Oscar de la Renta; to handbags like Celine debuted.
